Green Innovations & Trends – Part 2

 Permanent link

Every electrical marketer knows that it pays to keep a watchful eye on the most innovative product devleopers, especially those brands that have a proven impact on what your customers want, need and buy.

When it comes to green building and energy-efficient technologies, it appears that the trend will continue to increase consumer demand for Green Electrical. The stars are in alignment to support increasingly better energy-saving products, sytems and technologies.

We are living in the age of Green Energy. Our industry is the beneficiary of powerful forces that include Federal government funding, State and local energy codes and green building legislation, efforts by electrical utilities to curb electricity consumption, and the growing private and public sector motivation to reduce energy waste – and related costs. Throw in the projected increase in energy prices, as well as growing concerns in the aftermath of another major oil contamination disaster, and we can expect “clean energy” to remain on a strong growth curve for many yaers.

Distributors must be aware of product innovation in numerous product categories. Seeing the potential for growing profits, manufacturers are scrambling to introduce a barrage of new innovations.

This column will attempt to cover some of the more interesting energy-efficient solutions. We’ll look at power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, metering, building and home controls, and solar energy categories.

Here are some of the newer Green Electrical product solutions and trends you may want to look into:

1.      There seems to be an abundance of confusion and even misinformation in the marketplace pertaining to LED Lighting. Recognizing this, Lutron Electronics recently announced formation of their LED Control Center of Excellence, an information resource that provides the residential and commercial communities with LED information about:

  • LED features and challenges
  • Control options
  • The need for controls
  • Product compatibility testing
  • Educational materials

Reach LED Control Center of Excellence via: Phone 1-877-DIM-LED8, Email: LEDs@lutron.com , and www.lutron.com/LED .

2.      Last year, WattStooper announced the Digital Lighting Management (DLM) distributed lighting control solution which is designed to simplify setup and provide faster payback.

The company claims the DLM system is the first lighting control system to automatically configure for most energy efficient operations. WattStooper indicates DLM “meets and exceeds energy code requirements, saves more money than conventional controls, and provides an unprecendented return on investment for both new construction and retrofit projects. DLM’s Plug n’ Go™ technology allows error-free device connections customized for each room or space.

3.      Providing a strong quality guarantee that backs a customer’s equipment investment can be a powerful sales advantage. That’s why Siemens Industry now provides a 3-year warranty as standard on the company’s lighting panel, power panel, busway and switchboard products. It’s part of Siemens’ C3 Customer Confidence Certification program. The program also inludes :

  • Layouts, specifications, and technical application support from Siemens Consulting Account Managers (CAMs)
  • Customer Care Kits (commonly used parts and fasteners)
  • Product configuration support from Siemens Sales Support Center
  • Siemens Online Customer Service for order tracking/staus.

C3 Customer Confidence Certification program, including the extended warrantee, is automatically included with the purchase of many electrical distribution products without any fees or signups (www.usa.siemens.com/3yearwarranty ) .

Next week we’ll cover additional Green Electical Innovations & Trends.

An Avalanche of Green Innovations

 Permanent link

When it comers to growth trends, typically the more sophisticated marketers of technical products designed to serve business-to-business industries tend to be at or near the cutting edge of what’s hot – and what’s most likely to generate increased sales.

This is no different in the electrical, lighting and controls industries. And for that reason it pays to keep a watchful eye on A) innovative product devleopers, and B) the future trend prognosticators that product developers pay attention to. Both can have a direct impact on what your customers want, need and buy.

When it comes to green building and energy-efficient technologies, the trend watchers are loudly predicting continued growth and adoption of greener, more energy-efficient localized codes and legislation, construction methods and tools, and economic drivers that will continue to increase consumer demand for Green Electrical. All this spells a bright future for innovation by the developers of increasingly better energy-saving products, sytems and technologies.

Of course this begs the question can the distribution channel keep up with the flow of “new-and-improved” energy-efficient products? This thorny question has come up repeatedly during my five years of reporting on our industry.

Manufacturers continuously strive to develop the better mousetrap that will appeal to end user customers, ring up stellar sales and increase their market share. All this innovation means that each year distributors are expected to familiarize themselves with thousands of new product offerings, compare the virtues of competitive products, and become totally fluent on the very latest product capabilities, features and benefits. As a marketer who has spent over 30 years in the B2B trenches, I say “good luck!”

Distributors must do the best that they can in order to compare new product offerings and recognize their potential marketability. Today, few segments of the industry are generating as much product innovation as the energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls categories. With dozens of companies from global brands to entrepreneurial new comers introducing a barrage of refined technical solutions, the only way the beleagured distributor can hope to manage the flood of innovation is to designate a team of dedicated energy efficiency technology experts within their sales organization who by training, apptitude and professional passion have the determination and skills to keep on top of the avalanche of news.

Over the next few weeks I hope to present a snippet of the current innovation activity – both in the form of the projected trends shaping energy efficiency, and some of the newer product solutions that may become the next big seller.

Here are some intial samplings in no particular order:

1.      Despite higher intial product costs, wireless lighting controls are growing as a percentage of the overall controls market. All the big players are onboard with a growing collection of wireless systems that provide simplified retrofit installation without breaking through walls, running cable and connecting devices. This trend seems to be picking up momentum.

2.      Manufacturers subscribing to the EnOcean-based wirless technology continue to deliver new sensors and switches for a broad variety of applications that are based on the energy harvesting batteryless platform that converts ambient solar, thermo, and motion energy into useable electrical energy that powers building energy management systems. To date manufacturers have developed “450 different EnOcean-based interoperable devices that have been installed into more than 100,000 buildings worldwide” (www.enocean.com ).

3.      Manufacturers continue to address integrated energy management and lighting controls in an effort to simplify their application and installation. One recent example of this approach is Leviton’s GreenMAX™ Relay Control Panel line which attempts to combine the versatility of modular design, robust SCCR rating, daylighting capability and smart metering in a single “cost-effective lighting management solution” (www.leviton.com/GreenMAX ).

4.     Many smaller innovators continue to develop excellent green electrical solutions that make sense energy-wise and financially. One of these, The Green Savings Company offers the T5 Retrofit Kit which “has taken the best qualities of the T5 lamp and married it with a revolutionary technology” as a plug and play application that they claim can be installed in minutes. The T5 Retrofit Kit consists of a self-ballasted T5 lamp, reflector, and adapter that fit into existing standard T8 or T12 fixtures by passing the existing ballast. The company claims the high lumen output allows delamping each fixture for considerable energy savings (www.t5retrofit.com ).

We’ll continue to cover some of the newer Green Electical innovations in a series of reports.

Green Lighting for Parking Garages

 Permanent link

Looking for a virtually untapped market for energy-efficient lighting?

How about parking garages?

According to Geoffrey Friel, a technical sales specialist for Richard N Best Associates, America is home to parking garages that are wasting nearly $800 million in electricity charges each year thanks to outmoded inefficient lighting systems.

The Levittown, PA company specializes in facilities security services and is marketing the Limelight wireless fluorescent lighting system developed by TwistHDM for garage retrofits. The “HDM” in the TwistHDM company name stands for High Density Mesh wireless network which describes the Limelight unit that includes (3) high-output T8 lamps with dual rapid start ballasts, motion sensing and radio transmitters on every fixture (www.TwistHDM.com).

TwistHDM executive, Lee Eilers, indicated that the Grand Rapids, MI company introduced the Limelight system in late 2008 and now is experiencing increasing market traction with strong response from municipalities and universities. “Being a new technology, it took us a while to prove the energy savings could generate a typical payback of from 3 to 4 years,” said Eilers. “We now have thirteen completed installations including projects for Ohio State University, the city of Dearborn, MI, and numerous other colleges, municipalities and condo developments, and seven pending projects.”

Since most parking garage structures have their lights blazing 24/7/365, the Limelight system provides an ideal dimming solution that reacts by triggering lighting area-by-area and level-by-level as a pedestrian walks to their parked vehicle or drives in or out of the building.

According to TwistHDM’s Eilers, the typical payback period for the installed Limelight garage lighting retrofits projects is under 4 years, and the benefits go far beyond the energy savings and reduced electric utilities bill. Eilers points out that older garage structures are poorly lighted, and pose security hazards for building users.

One recent Beta test site using a Limelight installation to replace existing 175W Metal Halide lighting over a 7-day period projected an annual savings of nearly $15,000 on the garage’s electrical overhead costs by reducing electricity by 42.5%. The system is web-based which allows email or text warnings when lamps fail which eliminates maintenance inspections; projected ROI is slightly over 4 years.

New solutions like the Limelight wireless mesh network system offer distributors potentially advantageous ways to differentiate themselves from competitors. Every town, village, city, county and campus is the likely home of multiple garages that continue to consume electrical round the clock. For the distributor smart enough to propose a cost-saving, labor-saving green lighting solution, these garages could spell new business!

Leading Your Customers to LEED

As companies ramp up their efforts to increase their sales success in the growing green building segment, it’s a smart idea to have someone on the marketing/sales team tracking opportunities that are being generated by greener energy-efficient government programs.

Fortunately, there are some extremely helpful resources available that can keep your business abreast of these policies that impact nearly every state and community.

One such resource is the USGBC website. Better known as the U.S. Green Building Council, USGB is of course the daddy of the LEED Certified green building program and as such the organization maintains a fascinating and frequently updated listing of LEED initiatives.

For the sales team looking to expand its sales of energy-efficient products this reference can be a treasure trove because understanding the policies that are designed to direct green building and energy efficiency in the locales where a distributor operates is vital to that company’s marketing success. Keeping up on these types of changes is difficult and time consuming for many customers. So it’s still a basic fact of life that contractors, energy management consultants and building or facility managers continue to get much of their green technical and product information from their local electrical distributor.

As of April 1, the website listed various LEED-related laws and guidelines that likely impact your region or community, including legislation, executive orders, resolutions, ordinances, policies, and initiatives that are currently found in 45 states, 202 localities (138 cities, 36 counties, and 28 towns), 34 state governments (including Washington, DC and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, 14 federal agencies or departments, 17 public school jurisdictions, and 41 institutions of higher education across the U.S.

This data that’s available at no charge will help a distributor guide customers toward greener buying decisions. Being able to verify to customers the latest green building programs, codes and ordinances that have been put in place in their community is a powerful way of reinforcing the distributor’s role as a valued business partner and a dependable source of business knowledge.  Take a look at this rich resource. Better yet, have someone on your sales team become your go-to expert who can help educate your customers on the most current LEED/energy efficiency legislation and policies affecting your market.
