In the June, 2010 issue of Buildings magazine a feature article listed “Top 81 Money-Saving Products” (http://www.buildings.com/Magazine/ArticleDetails/tabid/3413/ArticleID/9937/Default.aspx ). While many of these products have nothing to do with the electrical industry, many energy-efficient green solutions made the list. Here are a few of the products your company might be looking at if you don’t already offer them to your customers:

  1. Philips offers the Wide-Lite HIBRED lighting system which combines either a traditional HID or Induction lamp lighting source -- which provides primary illumination -- integrated with a built-in LED array in the mounting arm that switches on during low traffic off hours. The company claims the HIBRED is the industry’s first such combination product.

  2. The article selected OSRAM SYLVANIA’s Post Top Fixture Retrofit Kit which is designed to convert existing street lighting from HID to energy-efficient LED lighting. The product can reduce each fixture’s energy consumption by more than 100W by allowing installation of high-efficiency 40W LED bulbs without replacing the entire fixture, and without any external modification to the existing fixture.

  3. Web-Mon is an easy-to-use web-enabled energy monitor from E-Mon that uses a standard web browser without additional software or programming to deliver a visual dashboard representing real-time meter data usage, including electrical consumption and carbon footprint estimates for previous periods of 7, 30 or 365 days. Web-Mon can interface with up to 24 separate metering points.

  4. The Convia-enabled Wiremold system available from Convia or Wiremold combines modular plug-n-play power delivery wiring for both plug load and lighting applications, including floor boxes, and poke-thru devices from Wiremold combined with system intelligence from Convia. The LEED-qualified system utilizes the Walerflex® wiring system and includes flexible pathways and energy controls that can monitor energy usage in real time, dynamically sheds the loads on demand, and archives the information.

  5. Also mentioned is the Celesta GL8206 Dimmable Replacement LED Lamp available from Bluestone Lighting. The lighting product can replace standard E26-based CFL and incandescent bulbs with an LED light source – without retrofitting. Company claims the product is compatible with most dimmers and consumes only 8W while providing light output that is equivalent to a 60W incandescent bulb. The combination should provide “savings of nearly $300 (at 10 cents per kWh) over the 50,000-hour rated life.

  6. Another listed green lighting product is actually non-electric thanks to its use of photoluminescent design. GloBrite® Ec Exit Signs by Jessup Manufacturing absorb and store ambient light eliminating maintenance and energy consumption. The company claims the exit lights to be the only “non-radioactive, zero energy and zero maintenance” emergency exit signage. During a blackout or loss of light the product’s stored energy makes the exit sign immediately visible, while requiring no maintenance for 25 years. http://www.jessupmfg.com/updates/featured_product.php

Next week, for those of you not taking vacation time, we’ll cover a few more Green Innovations and Trends.
